Office activation errors: Unlicensed Product, key already used and other fixes

Most Office activation problems come from an old Office version or trial still on the PC, or from a key that doesn't match the installed Office. Find your message below.

01First, quick checks

  • Check the key for typos. B and 8, or O and 0, are easy to mix up. Copy and paste it from your key email if you can.
  • Make sure the PC is online and the date and time are correct.
  • Check which Office is installed: open Word, go to File → Account and read the name under Product Information. An Office 2024 key only activates Office 2024, and an Office 2021 key only activates Office 2021.

02"Unlicensed Product" or "Product Activation Required"

Office is installed but not activated yet, or the activation was lost. Go to File → Account → Change Product Key, enter your 25-character key and confirm. If the message comes back after a restart, another Office license is probably fighting with yours: see "Several Office versions on the same PC" below.

03"This product key isn't for the version of Office you have installed"

The key and the installed Office don't match, for example an Office 2024 key on Office 2021, or a Professional Plus key on a Home & Business installation. Uninstall that Office in Settings → Apps → Installed apps, then install the right version from the download link in your key email. Follow how to install and activate Office.

04"This product key has already been used" or "has been blocked"

The key reached its activation limit or was rejected by Microsoft. Don't keep retrying, as repeated attempts don't help. Contact us with your order number and a screenshot, and we'll replace the key.

05Several Office versions on the same PC

Many new PCs come with a Microsoft 365 trial or "Office Home" preinstalled. Two Office versions on one PC often cause activation loops, a sign-in window that keeps coming back, or the wrong edition showing under File → Account.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and uninstall every Office or Microsoft 365 entry, including language packs.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Install only the Office you bought, from the link in your key email, and activate it with your key.

06Remove an old Office key that's still installed

If File → Account still shows an old or trial license, you can list and remove installed Office keys. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript OSPP.VBS /dstatus

Note the Last 5 characters of installed product key for the license you don't want, then remove it (replace XXXXX with those 5 characters):

cscript OSPP.VBS /unpkey:XXXXX

Office 2021 and Office 2024 also use the Office16 folder. With 32-bit Office, use Program Files (x86) instead. Then open Word and enter your key again.

07Office asks you to sign in instead of entering a key

You can skip the sign-in. Close the window, then go to File → Account → Change Product Key and enter your key there. Signing in with a Microsoft account is optional for Office 2024 and Office 2021.

08"We're sorry, something went wrong" during activation

Usually a temporary problem with Microsoft's servers or a VPN, proxy or firewall blocking the connection. Turn off any VPN, wait a few minutes and try again. If it keeps failing, send us a screenshot and we'll help.

09Still stuck?

Every key we sell is covered by our 30-day guarantee. Contact us with your order number and the exact message, and we'll fix it or replace the key. For Windows errors, see Windows activation errors.
