Windows 11 Pro key not working? 8 causes and how to fix them

When a Windows 11 Pro key is refused, the key itself is often fine: the problem is the edition installed, a typo, or the way the PC was activated before. Work through these causes in order.

Updated 7 October 2026

01The wrong edition of Windows is installed

A Windows 11 Pro key only activates Windows 11 Pro. Check what you have in Settings → System → About, under Edition.

  • You have Windows 11 Home: entering the Pro key in Settings → System → Activation → Change product key upgrades the PC to Pro and then activates it. See how to upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro.
  • You have Pro N, Education or Enterprise: a normal Pro key won't fit. Reinstall Windows 11 Pro from Microsoft's official download and choose Pro during setup.
  • You have a Windows 11 Home key on a Pro install: this can't work. You need a Pro key, or Windows 11 Home reinstalled.

02A typo in the key

Product keys are 25 characters in five groups of five. The most common mistakes are 0 (zero) and O, 8 and B, 1 and I. Copy and paste the key from your email instead of typing it, and make sure no space was copied at the start or end.

03The key was already used on another PC (0xC004C008)

A retail key activates one PC at a time. If it was used on an old computer, Microsoft may refuse it on the new one with error 0xC004C008 or "This product key has already been used". On the old PC, run slmgr /upk in Command Prompt (as administrator) to remove the key, then try again on the new PC, or use the phone activation option shown in the Activation settings. 04The key is blocked (0xC004C003)

Error 0xC004C003 means Microsoft has blocked the key. You can't fix this on your PC: contact the seller and ask for a replacement. If you bought from us, write to us with your order number and a screenshot, and we'll replace it under our 30-day guarantee.

05You were given a volume (KMS) key, not a retail key

If you see 0xC004F074, 0x8007007B or the message "Windows is activated using your organization's activation service", the key is a volume key meant for company networks. It won't activate a home PC for good. Ask for a proper retail key. Retail, OEM and Volume keys explained shows how to tell them apart.

06You changed the motherboard or other hardware (0xC004F213)

After a big hardware change, Windows may no longer recognise the PC and shows 0xC004F213. If your license was linked to your Microsoft account, open Settings → System → Activation → Troubleshoot and choose I changed hardware on this device recently. Otherwise, enter the key again. See how to reactivate Windows after a hardware change.

07Connection or date problems

  • Make sure the PC is online and the date, time and time zone are correct.
  • Turn off any VPN, proxy or strict firewall for a moment and try again.
  • Microsoft's activation servers are sometimes busy: wait an hour and click Activate again.

08Leftovers from an activator or a previous KMS setup

If the PC was activated with a "KMS activator" or was once part of a company network, old settings can block a genuine key. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

slmgr /upk
slmgr /cpky
slmgr /ckms
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

Replace the X's with your key. If activation still fails and the PC uses a modified copy of Windows, a clean install from Microsoft's official download is the safest fix: see how to clean install Windows 11.

09Check the result

Run slmgr /xpr or open Settings → System → Activation. "Windows is activated with a digital license" or "with a product key" means you're done. How to check if Windows is activated explains each message.
