Windows 11 Pro vs Enterprise: what's the difference and which do you need?
Windows 11 Enterprise adds security and management tools for large organisations, but it is licensed differently. For individuals and small businesses, Pro has everything that matters.
Updated 7 October 202601The short answer
Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise run on the same core: same apps, same games, same speed. Enterprise adds extra security and IT-management features and is only licensed to organisations, usually as a subscription. If you're buying for yourself or a small business, choose Windows 11 Pro.
02What both editions have
- BitLocker drive encryption
- Remote Desktop (connect to this PC)
- Hyper-V virtual machines and Windows Sandbox
- Group Policy, and joining a company domain or Microsoft Entra ID
- The same Windows updates and security fixes
03What Enterprise adds
- Advanced security such as Credential Guard (protects sign-in secrets) and stricter application control with AppLocker.
- Management tools for IT teams, for example BranchCache and more control over updates across many PCs.
- Long-term servicing (LTSC) versions that receive security fixes but no new features for years.
- With the E5 plan, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and other cloud security services.
04Licensing and price: the big difference
| Windows 11 Pro | Windows 11 Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can buy it | Anyone | Organisations, through Microsoft volume licensing or Microsoft 365 E3/E5 |
| How it's paid | One-time license | Usually a monthly or yearly subscription per user |
| Base license needed | No | Yes, it upgrades PCs that already have Windows Pro |
| Best for | Home, freelancers, small businesses | Companies with an IT department |
05Beware of cheap "Windows 11 Enterprise keys"
Because Enterprise isn't sold as a retail product, cheap Enterprise keys found online are almost always volume keys (MAK or KMS) taken from an organisation. They may activate at first and then be blocked by Microsoft later. Read Retail, OEM and Volume keys explained before buying.
06Which should you choose?
- Home use, gaming, studies: Windows 11 Home is enough (see Home vs Pro).
- Freelancers and small businesses that need BitLocker, Remote Desktop or a domain: Windows 11 Pro.
- Companies managing dozens of PCs with strict security rules: talk to a Microsoft licensing partner about Enterprise.
